T-shirt design
Create the winning t-shirt design commemorating the 2009 Festival Quijote, and it will be printed and available for sale at Festival Quijote. Entries must be postmarked or submitted electronically by March 9, 2012.

Video Demonstration
Demonstrate "how-to" (examples: cook, dance, etc.) in Spanish. Written, filmed, and produced by students. 5-10 minutes in length. Entries must be postmarked by March 9, 2012

Music Video
Artistic interpretation of a music selection of Spanish or Hispanic origin.  Performers on screen minimum 25% of video. Filmed and produced by students. 3-5 minutes. Entries must be postmarked by March9, 2012.

Dramatic Video
Short humorous or dramatic sketch that shows development of character(s), InSta situation, or idea through language use. Written, filmed, and produced entirely by entrants. 4-6 minutes. Entries must be postmarked by March 9, 2012.

Video Commercial
Advertise a real or invented product in Spanish. Written, filmed, and produced entirely by entrants. 30 seconds -1 minute. Entries must be postmarked by March 9, 2012.

Instrumental Music
Instrumental music performance from Latin music tradition. Folk, classical, or popular genres.

Vocal Music
Solo or group memorized performance of any genre in Spanish. Live or taped accompaniment is permitted.


Skit
Student-written humorous or dramatic sketch. Demonstrates development of character, situation, or idea. Language use appropriate to level of study.

Theater
Short selection from a published play in Spanish. Provide 3 copies for judges. Memorized and practiced.

Dance
Traditional dance from Spanish-speaking culture. Costumes encouraged.

Children’s Literature
Write and illustrate an original book appropriate for Spanish-speaking children 3-8 years of age. Alphabet and number books are not accepted. Students will be judged and compete according to their level.

Crafts
Student-made replication or reflection of Hispanic culture in the form of folk art or a typical or common hand-made craft.

Visual Art
Student-made replication or reflection of Hispanic culture in the form of sculpture, drawing, painting, etc.

Map
Hand-made map of any or all Hispanic countries. May be topographical, political, cultural, demographic, or economic. All text in Spanish.

Travel Poster
Promotes a tourist attraction of historical significance in the Spanish-speaking world. Text entirely in Spanish.

Recitation
Memorized reading of a poem. Students will be given 3 poems from which to choose. Attention to interpretation. 

Essay
Students will enter individually. Length of essays:
        Level 1 = 100-200 words
        Level 2 = 150-250 words
        Level 3 = 200-300 words
        Level 4 + bilingüe = 250-350 words
Students will be judged according to their level. Submit 2 copies of the essay by March 9, 2012.. Topic for 2012: Yo quiero vivir en ___ porque ___.

Poetry
Students will enter individually. The topic is open. Submit 2 copies of the poem by March 9, 2012. Students will be judged according to their level.

Impromptu Role Play
Students will enter in groups of 2. The presentation will last for 2 minutes and they will have 30 minute to prepare once they receive the topic. Times will be scheduled. This category is open to all students, and they will be judged according to their level. Sample topics: meeting a new student, making weekend plans, complaining to a teacher, arriving in a hotel, lost luggage, talking to a host family, interviewing an exchange student, talking to a travel agent.

Discussion Group
Students will enter individually and will be placed in a group of 5 or 6 students to compete. This category is open to students in levels 3 and above. Students will have 10 minutes to prepare, and the discussion will last for 10 minutes. Competition times will be scheduled. A group leader will be chosen by lottery, the group will decide on parameters, each person states thoughts, then the discussion continues to try to come to a consensus. Possible topics: school starting time, school uniforms, dress code, requiring students to study a language to graduate from high school.

Debate
Students will enter individually and will compete against another student (from the same level) chosen at random. Times will be scheduled. Each side (affirmative and negative) will have 2 minutes to present their case, 2 minutes to cross-examine the opposition and one minute for rebuttal. Competitors will be allowed an outline with a maximum of 15 words written on it (to be verified by the judges before the debate begins). This category is open to students of all levels. The resolution for 2011 is: Los estudiantes deben llevar uniformes a la escuela.

Original Oratory
Students will enter individually and will be judged according to their level.  Students in levels 1 and 2 should prepare a 1-2 minute speech, level 3 a 2-3 minute speech, and levels 4 and up and bilingual students should speak for 4-5 minutes. They will speak without notes. Students will prepare an original speech on a personal or public policy topic that is persuasive in nature. Ideas: violence on tv, video games, students working after school, school climate, foreign travel, Spanish in the US.

Storytelling
Students will enter individually. Students will speak for 4-5 minutes. Students will tell a folktale from memory. Their presentation may include voices, narrations, or gestures. Students should bring a copy of the folktale and references indicating where they found the tale.

Interview
This category is open only to students in levels 1 and 1A. Times will be scheduled. This category will look similar to the oral interviews that were part of the Concurso Estatal: students will answer 8 questions and describe a picture.
 

Power Point presentation
Students may enter individually or in groups of 2. They will give a 3-5 minute presentation about this topic: Un dia festivo o festival o costumbre del mundo hispanohablante que quiero ver es___. The presentation MUST be Power Point-compatible.
